Physiographic setting of the plots

Facing west, the burned area covers an entire slope/catchment in the Coimbra's Marginal Mountain range, overlaying schist and greywacke formations from precambric age, which forms steep linear slopes with a top convexity and often with no concavity at the slope bottom. The soils are humic cambisols, very disturbed due to the use of heavy machinery to prepare the soils for the tree plantations, which often includes the construction of earth terraces.
