Comparative analysis of indicators existing in the study sites Print

The analysis of the indicator database has shown that the system of indicators proposed can be successfully applied in a variety of environmental, social, economic and institutional locales. Some difficulties were found, especially collecting data for regional indicators such as the rate of soil surface sealing, drainage density and groundwater exploitation.

However, the comparative analysis of the study sites has revealed some key indicators from the wide-ranging list of those affecting desertification risk in a variety of conditions.

The analysis focused on

  • the main processes or causes of desertification identified in the study sites (such as soil erosion, soil salinization, water stress, overgrazing and forest fires and
  • the most important land management indicators affecting desertification risk.
