Experimental setup

Season 2009: One field traditionally irrigated with brackish groundwater and one field irrigated during the last 10 years with water from a local stream will be monitored in detail. A highly degraded field (also irrigated with surface water) will be studied (preliminary) with the addition of gypsum. The gypsum requirements will be determined according to standard procedures.

Season 2010: In cooperation with the local authorities freshwater will be transported in the field irrigated traditionally with groundwater and the short-term effects on soil quality and production will be demonstrated. Additionally, different strategies for soil reclamation will be tested in combination with freshwater transport. These include gypsum application, deep ploughing and combination of both. The treatment will be applied within predefined plots inside the farm. The adjacent field will be used as a control.
