Summary
The location comprises 2 kinds of agricultural fields with considerable erosion, one is sloping crop land under maize or millet production, the other is sparse forest. The fields are located on moderately and steep slopes on cultivated loess soil. The main SWC practices in this region include terraces, check-dams and grass planting. SWCs tested in DESIRE include contour ploughing and residue mulching for cropland, and a contour infiltration ditch for the sparse forest. The control fields have no mulch and the normal ploughing direction. Monitoring is done for rill activity, soil moisture and soil structure, and crop yield and health parameters. A flume downstream measures runoff and sediment loads. Weather variables are measured at Sanshilipu town, 10 km distance.
