Soils

Shallow Luvic soils (<50 cm deep) on the plains has moderate clayey-sand texture, with the calcareous zone reached at around 50cm depth. The soils are low/moderate in fertility and can be sticky under wet conditions. On drying, the soils form crusts which, once trampled upon by cattle, form easily erodible (dusty) material. Thus the bare patches are dust source zones. Water erosion is limited to pan margins and along the Boteti river, where there are little scarps.
