Geology

The geology comprises the Archaean basement, overlain by Karoo sediments, with the Kalahari beds (sands, calcretes, silcretes) forming the top layer. The area lies within the Kalahari-Zimbabwe fault system, and the influence of the faults has resulted in formation of the current depression. The current topography comprises plains (lacustrine) and the ridges (palaeo-lake margins) and these are relicts of past systems, now being reworked by Quaternary geomorphic processes.
