Geology

The eruptive Complex of Pico da Antónia (PA) conglobates a large extension of the basin. It is a much diversified lithological complex, conglobating rocks that are part of different geological episodes, whether volcanic, sedimentary or continental, that occurred in very distinct ages (Serralheiro, 1976; Bertrand, 1996; Costa, 1996). In this complex, the volcanic rocks are more abundant and formed, in its majority, from sub-aerial eruptions that originated pyroclasts and breaches, predominantly to the interior of the basin, and basaltic lava, more extensive and thicker towards the littoral (Costa, 1996).
